The majority of soils have the capacity to "fix" large amounts of phosphorus. Fixation occurs as a result of phosphorus being converted in the soil into chemical states that are less available to plants. In winter, some of the phosphorus can be "fixed" by aluminium, iron, calcium or manganese. When phosphorus is applied to these soils during winter, the plants are not growing rapidly enough to take up the phosphorus before it is "fixed". This phosphorus is not available to plants even when the soil dries out. Fertilizing these soils early will ensure that the phosphorus is available to the pasture/crop for the maximum possible time before fixation begins to occur.
